Guests spend the week before it gluing rhinestones along a cuff and deciding whether a chambray shirt counts. One arrives with three brooches stacked down a lapel, all inherited, none matching. Another has a gold shank button polished with toothpaste and will tell you so.
Twelve sit down to a table laid properly, courses and all, in stiff indigo that does not bend at the elbow. The jackets stay on through dessert because the whole outfit is the evening's work. Somewhere between the second course and the coffee, a stone comes loose and lands on the floor, and the owner keeps eating.

What to actually tell people
- Rule on the dress code in writing Say whether chambray, black denim and a denim skirt all count, because someone will ask at four in the afternoon. The sparkle requirement is the part people forget, so state it twice.
- Keep a tray by the door Spare brooches, safety pins and a few adhesive stones handle the guest who turned up plain. A hot glue gun belongs on the kitchen counter, not near the table.
- Protect the chairs Raw indigo transfers onto pale upholstery and cream napkins in one evening. Use dark napkins, and throw something over anything light before the first guest sits.
- Seat twelve wider than you think Stiff jackets and stacked cuffs need a few more inches per place than shirtsleeves do. Set the glasses in from the edge, where a rhinestone sleeve cannot reach them.
