Birthday invitation

No Singing

The candle gets lit in full silence, and the clapping starts half a second late.

Birthday invitation: Charcoal felt card with a red stitched border. Cream embroidered slab capitals read NO SINGING, with CLAPPING OK in red, a name below, then the date and venue. A burnt match and a lit candle scorch the felt.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation is for the person who likes being had over and does not like being sung at. People arrive, coats go on the bed, drinks get poured, and the evening runs like any good get-together until the kitchen light goes down. A match is struck. One candle goes up. Nobody fills the quiet.

The moment it turns is the three seconds after the flame catches, when everyone remembers what they were told at the door and holds. Then applause, short and businesslike, and the knife comes out. The cake is cut before the wax reaches the frosting, plates move, and the room goes back to talking about something else entirely.

What to actually tell people

  • Brief the ringleader One guest starts the song every year, usually from the doorway, usually before anyone else is ready. Tell that person when they arrive, not when the candle is already lit.
  • Strike it once A fresh wick can take three attempts, and dead air is where someone starts humming. Light the candle for a second in the kitchen first, then blow it out and carry it in ready.
  • Name what happens instead Silence needs an ending or the room invents one. Clapping works, a single raised glass works, a count of three works. Decide which before you dim the lights.
  • Keep the cake moving Have the knife, plates and forks already on the counter. The applause stops, the first slice goes out, and the evening carries on without a ceremony attached.
