This birthday invitation sets up an eighteenth built around one rule: everyone wears black, and the rule holds from the door onward. A room is booked, the lights stay low, and the guest of honour is the only person with gold on. Sequins, a borrowed clutch, one pair of earrings. The rest of the room is a single dark shape with faces in it.

The drinks go on one table, the coats go on one rail, and the first twenty minutes are spent photographing each other against the darkest wall available. Someone fixes the lighting by turning a lamp sideways. Half the room has known her since the fourth grade and saw her that morning in a hoodie. They still arrived dressed for a verdict.

What to actually tell people

Define black before the door Charcoal, navy and very dark brown all get argued for. Settle it in the group chat a week ahead so nobody is negotiating in the entryway.
Light the room for dark fabric A room full of black clothing reads as one shape in low light. Put one warm lamp at face height near the wall people will photograph against.
Lint rollers by the coats Black fabric shows everything, and sequins shed onto whoever stands next to them. Two rollers on the console table handle the whole night.
Tag the coats Every coat on the rail will be black and most will be the same cut. Numbered tags, or a strip of tape with a name, save twenty minutes at the end.
