Birthday invitation

One Year Loving

Lemonade goes into the teacups, and the one-year-old gets hers in a lidded cup.

Ivory cotton card with pearl border: blush smocked band, pearl swag with gold charm, stitched script One Year Loved, date patch, Emma's First Birthday, tea room, round 1 patch.

This birthday invitation imagines a first birthday held in a tea room, with the small tables pushed into one row and the linen already pressed. The guest list is almost entirely adults: both grandmothers, an aunt who drove in that morning, a neighbor who knitted something and wrapped it in tissue. The menu is cake and lemonade. The lemonade is poured into the good glasses anyway.

The dress comes out of its paper with the smocking still crisp, and it is photographed early, because it will not stay that way. Cake arrives at the high chair, and within a minute there is frosting at the elbow and a pearl strand being quietly moved to the far end of the table. The afternoon ends when the nap says it ends. Everyone stays another ten minutes regardless, passing the baby down the row.

What to actually tell people

  • Build the hour around the nap A one-year-old has one good stretch in the afternoon, and it is shorter than the booking. Put cake twenty minutes in rather than at the end, so the main event happens while she is still interested.
  • Two cakes, one of them hers Keep a small plain cake for the high chair and serve the real one by the slice at the table. The frosting on the small one should be the colour you are willing to see on the dress.
  • Photograph the dress first The smocking, the stitched number and the pearls survive about ten minutes of actual party. Take the pictures as guests arrive, before anyone opens a gift.
  • Give the pearls a shelf Anything heirloom, the strands included, belongs on the sideboard rather than around a neck being grabbed at. Lay them out where they can be admired and not pulled.
