Puzzle Night No Peeking
The edge pieces are finished in twenty minutes, and then nothing happens for an hour.
A game night invitation for the quietest competitive event there is: one box, one thousand pieces, and a dining table cleared down to the bare oak. The lid comes off, the pieces go face up, and within a minute somebody has appointed themselves to the edges. Sorting happens by colour, then by colour nobody agrees on. There is a pile for sky, a pile for sand, and a third pile that is just contested.
The first hour is productive. The second is two people holding the same piece up to the lamp. Someone finds the sand castle flag and announces it to the room. Guests drift to the kitchen, come back, and place one piece on the way past. The last piece gets held for a moment before it goes in, and whoever is holding it knows exactly what they are doing.

What to actually tell people
- Clear the table the night before A thousand pieces need the whole surface, not the half that is left after the mail. Move the fruit bowl somewhere else entirely, because it will come back otherwise.
- Put the box lid where everyone can see it Prop it against something at the head of the table rather than leaving it flat. Two people checking the same beach hut from opposite ends is how the evening stalls.
- Sort into baking sheets Four rimmed trays for sky, sand, water and edges keeps the piles from sliding into one another. They also stack when the table has to become a table again.
- Serve food that leaves no fingerprints Crackers, grapes, anything dry and one-handed. Keep drinks on a side table, because one ring mark on cardboard is permanent.
