A wedding invitation like this one sets up an evening wedding where the dress code has one line more than usual: wear a brooch. Guests arrive after dark in black, and the jewelry is the part that differs. A crystal starburst that belonged to a grandmother. A pearl cluster bought for a wedding in 1962. An enamel bee. A small gold knot on a satin lapel, pinned above a white pocket square.

The ceremony is short and the room is warm with lamplight. At dinner, people lean across the table to look at each other's pins and ask where they came from, and the answers are usually a person rather than a shop. The toasts come before dessert. The first dance starts once the tables are cleared, and the dancing runs long, because nobody wants to take the jacket off yet.

What to actually tell people

  • Put the brooch line on the invitation itself Guests need weeks, not days, to find a pin they like. Saying it plainly alongside black tie gives people time to call an aunt, open a jewelry box or stop at a flea market.
  • Keep a dish of spare pins by the door A dozen inexpensive brooches in a shallow dish solves it for anyone who came straight from the airport or forgot. Add a few safety pins, since old catches give out.
  • Light the room for stones and pearls Crystal and enamel go dead under overhead light. Candles and low lamps at table height are what make a starburst catch, and they flatter the black cloth everyone is wearing.
  • Ask for close frames before dinner Tell the photographer you want lapels, collars and wrists shot early, while the pins are straight and the pocket squares are still folded. Those are the photographs people ask for afterwards.
