This wedding invitation is for an evening held inside a theatre, where the order of the night follows the order of a program. Guests come in off the street, up the carpeted stairs, and take numbered seats in rows facing the stage. The house lights go down for the vows and come up again when the couple walks back up the aisle.

Then the doors to the lobby open and supper is set out on small tables under the gold fringe of the balcony. People eat standing, find the bar, read the program again. After the plates are cleared, the band sets up where the ceremony was, and the dancing happens on the stage floor itself.

What to actually tell people

  • Print the night as a program Give guests a folded program with the two acts on it: ceremony, intermission supper, dancing. It tells everyone when to sit, when to get up and when the bar opens, without anyone having to announce it.
  • Work from the house seating chart Theatre seats are fixed and numbered, so there is no table plan to make. Hold the first four rows for family, keep the aisle seats for anyone who needs them, and have two ushers walk people to row and seat number.
  • Plan supper for standing Intermission is the meal, and the lobby has no proper dining tables. Choose food that works on one plate with one hand, set out a few high tables, and give it a full forty-five minutes so nobody is rushed back in.
  • Book the house technician The venue has a lighting board and microphones, and someone has to run them. Agree your cues in advance: house lights down for the vows, a mic on the officiant and on the readings, lights up for the walk out.
