Book club invitation

Book Club Read or Bluff

Someone quotes the back cover with total confidence and is not challenged.

Final TouchInk-blue library book cloth with a cognac leather bookmark tab at top right. Gilt capitals read BOOK CLUB and READ OR BLUFF above ELEVENTH MEETING, with a stamped date-due slip carrying the date and venue.
Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

A book club invitation for the eleventh meeting of a group that has outlasted the first book, the second host, and the idea that everyone would read. People arrive within twenty minutes of each other, put a dish on the counter, and find a seat before the questions start. Two copies on the table have receipts for bookmarks at page forty.

The first half hour is honest. Then somebody offers a theory built entirely on the jacket copy, delivered with such composure that the table lets it stand, and from there the conversation moves to the ending, the narrator, and whether the author was being serious. The next book gets chosen in the last ten minutes, when everyone is standing up. Three people say they will start it this weekend.

What to actually tell people

  • Lay out the snacks before the questions The table eats while it talks, and a full plate makes an unread chapter easier to admit. Put everything out at once so nobody is up at the counter during the good part.
  • Open with a question that does not require the ending Start on the first fifty pages, the setting, or the title. It gives the half-finished readers something true to say before anyone gets to the last chapter.
  • Name the next book before the coats come out Decisions made in the doorway get revisited by text all week. Settle on one title while everyone is still seated, then say the date out loud twice.
  • Keep a short record of what you have read Eleven meetings is a real list, and nobody can recall meeting four unaided. One page on the fridge or in the group chat settles every argument about what you already covered.
