Build Day
A hard hat is issued at the gate with a name taped across it, and it stays on.
This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.
Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.
What the Final Touch isThis birthday invitation is for a morning in a yard, where the first thing that happens is the hats. Each guest is fitted at the gate, the strap tightened, a strip of masking tape across the front with a name on it. Then the dirt pile. Plastic spoons, toy dump trucks, a line of caution tape that nobody respects, and a great deal of serious discussion about where the hole is going.
The excavator is the centrepiece, whether it is a ride-on or a real machine with the keys out. Cake comes out on a plywood top laid over two sawhorses, and the candles are lit while the hats are still on. The turn is at the end: the hats go home with the guests, and three of them will be worn to the grocery store that week.

Hard hats and cake.
Every line of the wording is an example, and yours to replace. The title is painted into the artwork. Type your own and it is drawn again with your words.
What to actually tell people
- Issue the hats at the gate Foam hard hats with an adjustable band fit almost any head, and a strip of masking tape across the brim turns each one into a name badge. Fit them as guests arrive, not later.
- Buy more dirt than you think One wheelbarrow of play sand empties in ten minutes and a bagged load of topsoil holds a crew for an hour. Add plastic spoons, a sieve, and two things buried shallow enough to be found.
- Put the big machine out of reach If there is a real excavator in the yard, rope it off and hand out a ride-on digger instead. Photographs beside the bucket, with the keys in your pocket, satisfy everyone.
- Set the cake on plywood A sheet of plywood over two sawhorses makes a table that nobody worries about, and a canvas drop cloth over it wipes clean. Keep the candles upwind of the dirt pile.
