A retirement invitation for the end of a long run, marked the evening the last shift ends. Drinks are at the bar a short walk from the office, early enough that the room is still quiet and the window table is free. The badge is already handed in. The people she trained arrive first and take the end of the bar, and the coupes come out instead of the conference room cups.

Someone produces the photo from her first year on the job. Two people speak, one who was there at the start and one she hired, and a list gets read of the things only she knew how to do, now divided among three others. Her address still forwards to the office. It goes unanswered regardless.

What to actually tell people

Clear the handover before the drinks Badge, laptop and building keys go back at the desk, not at the bar. Nobody wants company property in a tote under the table during the toast.
Take the early window The party starts the moment the shift ends, while the room is empty and the light is still coming through. Ask for the table by the window and hold it before the after-work crowd arrives.
Set the dress code against the office She is in sequins. Tell everyone else to wear something they would never have worn to a desk, and make it clear that lanyards stay in the car.
Her name only Order the cake with her name on it and nothing else: no job title, no department, no number of years. The same goes for anything engraved.
