Retirement invitation

Hanging Up the Spurs

The spurs come down off the hook once, for a photograph, and go straight back up.

Retirement invitation: Gray suede card with cream stitching. An antique silver spur hangs from a brass hook at top left, a stamped rawhide date tag at right. Silver slab capitals read HANGING UP THE SPURS, details below.

This retirement invitation is for a working life that ends in a long room with folding tables pushed into one line and brisket resting under foil. The people who come are not one crowd. There are men he hired in his first decade, two of them retired now themselves, and a crew from the last few years who only ever knew him as the voice on the radio before sunrise.

Plates go out first. Then somebody taps a microphone that the room does not need, and three stories get told, one of them twice. Near the end the spurs come off the hook for a picture, and the newest hire is the one told to hold them. The years sound shorter out loud than they felt.

What to actually tell people

  • Decide who hands over the spurs The handover works when it is planned: one person, one short line, before dessert. Have a shadow box ready, or they end up in a truck console by Sunday.
  • Cap the stories at three Three decades will produce more than three stories, and every one after the third gets quieter. Ask three people in advance, give them five minutes each, and let the rest happen at the tables.
  • Put the start year on the name tags Guests span three decades of the same payroll and half of them have never met. A year written under the name introduces people faster than you can.
  • Order a pound for every two guests Count heads off the RSVPs and tell the kitchen when you want it out. Serve before the toasts: nothing goes cold faster than a plate waiting out a speech.
