Birthday invitation

Girl Dinner

Dinner is three cornichons, a wedge of brie, and whatever the last guest brought.

Pink card with a ruffled satin edge, embroidered in cherry red: script title 'Girl Dinner', Emma's birthday supper, a plate of brie, tomatoes and cornichons, then date and venue.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A birthday invitation for a supper where nobody cooks. Everyone is assigned one snack and arrives with it: a tub of olives, a box of crackers, grapes still in the bag, the good butter. It all goes on one board in the middle of the table and becomes dinner by consensus.

The order of operations matters. People graze standing up, then sit down, then graze again. The birthday candle goes into the brie because nothing else will hold it upright, and the singing happens over a cheese board at an angle. By eleven the board is three cornichons and a cracker, and nobody has left.

What to actually tell people

  • Assign the snacks in writing One item per guest, claimed in the thread before anyone leaves the house. Otherwise four people bring hummus and no one brings bread.
  • Take the brie out early An hour on the counter is the difference between a wedge and a chalk slab. Put it out before the first guest knocks.
  • Small plates, and more than you think Side plates and a few cocktail forks keep the cornichon jar from becoming communal. Stack them next to the board, not in the kitchen.
  • Plan where the candle goes A birthday candle will not stand in a cracker. The brie holds it upright, and the photograph works better than a cake anyway.
