This game night invitation runs on a bowling league that exists for exactly one evening. Lane seven is held under the host's name, the shoes come out of a cubby in size order, and everyone spends four minutes choosing a house ball by color before admitting the finger holes are wrong. Names go up on the overhead screen abbreviated to three characters, which is how at least one person gets a new nickname for the year.

The first game is played properly. Somewhere in the second, the bumpers go up, the scoring stops mattering, and the conversation moves to the plastic seats behind the ball return. Fried pickles arrive and sit next to the hand dryer. By the tenth frame the only thing anyone agrees on is that the lane was oiled unfairly, and the team photograph is taken in the rented shoes.

What to actually tell people

Book the lane, not the evening Alleys sell lanes by the hour, and six people playing two games will run past the hour. Reserve one extra and put the name on the booking the guests will recognise.
Tell them about socks Rental shoes require them and the counter sells them at a markup. One line in the message saves three people a detour.
Set the roster before the first frame The screen truncates names, so decide the order and the spelling while everyone is still lacing up. Changing it mid-game resets the scores on most machines.
Keep food off the ball return Order at the counter and claim the table behind the seats for baskets and drinks. Grease on the ball is the one thing that genuinely ruins the night.
