Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

A denim birthday invitation sets up a 21st spent in a diner booth with a dead flip phone on the table. Guests dig through a drawer at home before they leave, find the handset, find the wrong charger, and bring both. The phones go in the middle of the table next to the milkshakes. Half of them light up. The rest are passed around anyway, for the hinge.

The night runs on small competitions nobody announced: whose ringtone is worst, who still knows a nine-key text by thumb, who kept the charm hanging off the aerial. Somebody brings loose rhinestones and a pot of pink puff paint, and by the second round of fries there are initials drying on a back pocket. The guest of honor sits in the middle of the booth. Everyone is clear on whose night it is.

What to actually tell people

  • Set the entry condition early Say in the invite that the flip phone is the price of admission, and say it once more two days out. Drawers take time to search.
  • Bring a box of chargers Old handsets hold a charge for about nine minutes. A shoebox of mismatched cables and one power strip at the end of the booth keeps the screens lit.
  • Put the decorating on a tray Iron-on patches, loose rhinestones, a glue pen and a handful of gel pens fit on one diner tray. Jeans get decorated between courses, not before.
  • Book the booth, not the table A booth seats six and the sound carries less. Call ahead for the late slot and warn them the phones will be out on the table.
