Wedding invitation

Rose & Gabriel

Vows are said beneath a rose window, and the supper after runs on candlelight.

Wedding invitation: Ivory card with a gilded rose window of sapphire and garnet glass and an R and G monogram at top, a leaded glass strip down the left edge, and Rose & Gabriel in garnet script over the date and venue.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A wedding invitation built for a stone room with glass in it. Guests come in off the gravel in the late afternoon, and the light through the window lands in pieces across the floor and the backs of the chairs. The tracery is gold, the panes are opal and sapphire and garnet, and everyone looks up before they look for their seat.

Then the sun goes and the candles take over. Long tables, wax on brass, supper carried out while the room is still warm from the ceremony. Toasts carry down the hall because the stone sends them there. People stay at the table a long time, and the last of the tapers are burning low by the time the coats come off their hooks.

What to actually tell people

  • Ask the venue about open flame before you count candles Stone halls and abbey rooms often cap how many lit tapers they allow, and some require glass around each one. Get the rule in writing, then buy hurricane shades for the drafty aisles.
  • Time the ceremony to the window Colored light only falls across the floor for an hour or so, and the direction changes with the month. Visit at the hour you are considering, see where the light lands, and tell the photographer which wall holds it.
  • Plan for the echo Stone carries sound and smears it. Put a microphone on a stand for the vows and the readings, and ask anyone reading to go slower than feels natural.
  • Let the two initials repeat The gilded monogram in the center of the window is worth carrying through the evening. Use the same two letters on the wax seal, the menu card and the napkin tie, and nothing else needs decorating.
