Birthday invitation

Sophia Turns 30

Every guest matches the bag, and the bag gets its own chair at the head of the table.

Birthday invitation: Burgundy leather card with a croc-textured flap and gold turn-lock clasp, cream script reading Sophia Turns above a large gold 30, with the date and venue below and a gold FALL COLLECTION plaque.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation imagines a thirtieth that arrives like a seasonal release: one room, one color, one evening. Guests turn up in oxblood, wine, burgundy and whatever they are willing to argue is burgundy. The bags are small and gold-clasped and hold a lipstick and nothing else. Dinner is ordered properly, the wine list is consulted twice, and the lamps stay low enough that everyone looks expensive.

The turn comes between the main course and dessert, when one person stands with a glass and makes it short. Then the plates go, the amaro comes out in small glasses, and somebody discovers the clasp on her bag does not reopen without both hands. Nobody leaves for a second venue. The table is kept until they close it.

What to actually tell people

  • Name the shade, not the outfit Say oxblood, burgundy and wine in the message, and say that black is welcome but will read as black. One guest will arrive in brown. Seat her near a candle.
  • Book the darker room Deep reds die under blue overhead light and come alive under lamps and candles. Ask the restaurant for the back room or the corner banquette, and ask them not to raise the lights for dessert.
  • Somewhere to put the bags Everyone is carrying something small that will not survive the floor. Request bag stools, or clear one side table by the wall and send the coats to the cloakroom rather than the chair backs.
  • Place the toast on purpose Tell one person in advance that they are speaking, and put it after the main course while the glasses are still full. Three sentences. Then let the amaro come out.
