This dinner party invitation is for a table that has been set six times already. Twelve people, five courses, one long surface made from whatever the house can produce: the dining table, the leaf nobody can find, two chairs carried up from the basement. Napkins are rolled into brass rings because the host bought twelve of them in a single moment of commitment. The lamps get turned down before the first guest arrives.

Phones go in coat pockets by the door and stay there, which is awkward for about eleven minutes and then is not. Courses arrive at their own pace. Somewhere between the fourth plate and the fifth, people stop sitting up straight, the red gets poured without asking, and the conversation goes somewhere nobody planned. The seventh seating runs long. They all do.

What to actually tell people

  • Count chairs before you count guests Twelve seats is the whole premise, and a dining table rarely holds twelve on its own. Find the leaf, borrow two chairs, and sit in the worst one yourself to check it works.
  • Build the menu around the burners you actually have Five courses sounds enormous until three of them are served cold or made the day before. Keep the hot work to the course you most want to be praised for.
  • Give the phones somewhere to go A rule printed on an invitation needs a place to land. Put a shallow bowl or a basket by the coats so guests have an obvious answer at the door.
  • Be specific about the red Asking for one bottle each means twelve bottles arrive at once. Open two early, keep the rest on the sideboard, and send someone home with whatever is still corked.
