Just because invitation

The Annual Excuse | Gone Fishing

Nine rods go up to the cabin and two of them get wet.

Final TouchJust because invitation: Navy canvas card edged in rope with brass grommets. A fishing rod at left, a trout hanging from a cast line at right, cream lettering THE ANNUAL EXCUSE, a TACKLE OPTIONAL tag, date and venue below.
Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

A just because invitation for the weekend that has run every year since the first one: the same cabin on the lake, the same truck beds full of rods, the same claim that this year the fishing gets taken seriously. Coffee is on before light. One boat goes out at six with three people in it. The rest stand on the dock holding mugs and offering advice across forty feet of water.

By mid-morning the rods are leaning against the porch rail and nobody has moved them. One trout is landed, photographed from three angles, and put back. Dinner was always coming out of the cooler. Cards go down on the folding table once it gets dark, and the same argument from last year resumes at the same point. Very little fishing is done. Attendance is still mandatory.

What to actually tell people

  • Give one time: when the boat leaves Everything else on the weekend arranges itself. Post the launch time, and let people decide privately whether they intend to be awake for it.
  • Keep two spare rods by the door Tackle optional only holds up if someone brought extra. Half the group has not owned a rod since high school, and a loaner keeps them on the water instead of on the porch.
  • Assign the bunks before anyone drives up One cabin, nine people, and a loft that sleeps two comfortably. Send the sleeping list with the directions so nobody is negotiating it at midnight with a duffel bag in hand.
  • Plan a dinner that does not depend on the catch The fryer comes out every year and is used about once. Put something in the cooler that cooks regardless, and treat any fish that arrives as a bonus course.
