Vivienne & James
Beaded gowns and dinner jackets fill a brass-lit room, and the dancing starts late.
This wedding invitation imagines a wedding that begins once the evening is already underway, behind a heavy door, in a room of low lamps and polished brass. Guests come in out of the cold, hand over coats, and take a coupe from a tray. The ceremony is short. The band is already set up behind the floor.
Then it is dinner at round tables, toasts between sets, and a floor that stays full because the horns keep going. Sequins catch the light. Someone teaches the Charleston badly and everyone tries it anyway. Late in the night the kitchen sends out something hot, the band plays one more, and the coats come back off the rack.

Dress to the nines.

What to actually tell people
- Tell them how to find the door. A room like this is often unmarked, down a stair or behind a restaurant. Put the exact entrance in the message, along with where to park and which bell to ring, so nobody is circling the block in heels.
- Spell out what dressing to the nines means. Guests read a line like that and want a translation. Say black tie, or say beading, sequins, velvet and dinner jackets, and mention that the floor is for dancing so shoes should survive it.
- Plan for a late start. If the ceremony runs after the usual dinner hour, people will arrive hungry. Have trays going from the first minute and send something hot out late, well after the cake.
- Build the night around the band. Live brass is what makes this room work, so book the players before the florist and put them within sight of the floor. Keep toasts to the breaks between sets rather than stopping the music twice.
