Wine & Cheese
The sweater is cashmere, the sweatpants are not negotiable, and the first bottle is open.
A dinner party invitation for six people, one board and three bottles, with a standing instruction to stay for the third pour. The cheese comes out of the fridge an hour before anyone arrives. There is a hard one, a soft one, and a blue one that two guests will refuse. Honey, walnuts, a knife for each, and crackers in the box they came in.
Guests arrive in their best knitwear and whatever is comfortable from the waist down, and the distinction holds all evening. The first bottle is tasted properly, with comments. The second is poured standing at the counter. By the time the third is open the board is down to rind and three olives, the candles are low, and somebody is explaining the acorn on their keyring to a room that did not ask.

What to actually tell people
- Six, and stop there Small batch means everyone fits on the sofa and the two good chairs. A seventh guest turns the evening into a standing event, and standing events end earlier.
- Cheese out an hour early Cold brie tastes like nothing. Set the soft ones on the counter when you start getting dressed, and leave the hard ones until the first guest knocks.
- Put the sweatpants in writing If the dress code is only implied, one guest arrives in a blazer and keeps it on out of principle. State both halves plainly so nobody has to guess which one you meant.
- Line the bottles up before anyone sits Three bottles, lightest first, opened in order rather than all at once. Put a carafe of water on the table next to them so the third pour is a decision and not an accident.
