Fine China anniversary invitation

20th Anniversary

Twelve place settings, two chipped, and the chipped ones go to whoever did it.

Fine China anniversary invitation: Porcelain-white card with gold rim and cobalt vine border, blue asters at lower left, deckled tag lettered P & D on gold cord. Painted at the top: 20TH ANNIVERSARY, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This anniversary invitation is for the twentieth year, kept at home and held in the afternoon. The good service comes down from the cabinet and gets counted against the guest list. Tea is brewed in a pot and poured at the table. Cake goes on the plate that only appears for this, cut with the knife from the wedding, and nobody is trusted with the lid of the sugar bowl.

The room is set before anyone arrives: saucers out, cups turned the right way up, a chair found for the person who will not sit. The turn comes when the toast is made and the couple are asked, again, how they met, and the two versions do not match. Afterwards everything is washed by hand at the sink, and one guest insists on drying.

Tea, cake, and a toast

Every line of the wording is an example, and yours to replace. The title is painted into the artwork. Type your own and it is drawn again with your words.

What to actually tell people

  • Count the set the night before Lay out every cup, saucer and side plate and match the number to your replies. If you are short, mismatched blue and white reads as intentional at twenty years.
  • Tea from a pot, not mugs Brew in the pot and pour at the table so the service is actually used. Gold-rimmed cups cannot go in the microwave, so keep a second kettle going for refills.
  • Make the toast before the cake Everyone is seated and holding something, which never happens twice in one afternoon. Keep it to a minute and let the couple answer questions afterwards.
  • Plan the washing-up Nothing with a gold rim goes in the dishwasher. Set a basin of warm water and two tea towels by the sink and give the drying to one person, not four.
