25 Anniversary Plate

The table is booked under the same name it was twenty-five years ago.

Final TouchIvory bone china plate with a platinum rim and a fine green hairline, lettered in forest green: a large 25 above ANNIVERSARY, then DAVID & ANNE, with the date and venue below.
Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

An anniversary invitation for a sit-down dinner in a private room, with one long table, a set menu agreed a week early, and about twenty people who were mostly at the wedding. Guests arrive in good coats. The couple is seated in the middle of the table, across from each other, because that is the arrangement they have kept since the first apartment.

Dinner runs three courses and nobody is rushed through any of them. Somewhere between the plates being cleared and dessert arriving, one person stands with a folded piece of paper and talks for three minutes about the two of them, and the room goes quiet in a way restaurants rarely allow. Then the cake comes out, the coffee goes round, and the conversation breaks back into pairs. People stay at the table long after the kitchen has closed.

What to actually tell people

  • Seat them across, not at the head Put the couple opposite each other in the middle of the long table. Everyone gets a turn next to one of them, and neither spends the night shouting down fourteen place settings.
  • Lock the menu a week out Give the private room two mains and one vegetarian option and collect choices with the RSVPs. A kitchen cooking twenty plates at once will do far better work if it knows the count by Monday.
  • One toast, before dessert Ask one person in advance and tell them three minutes. Anything longer and the cake arrives mid-sentence, which no restaurant will hold for you.
  • Ask for a photograph instead of a gift Twenty-five years in, the house is full. Ask each guest to bring one photograph from those years and leave it in a dish by the door, and hand the stack over with the coffee.
