Barbecue & Baby
The baby makes it around the whole table before the brisket does.
A just because invitation in the plainest sense: the smoker went on before sunrise and there is a new person for everyone to meet. Folding tables go up in the yard, the cooler lives on the porch steps, and the slaw comes out of the refrigerator at the last possible minute. Relatives arrive in waves, each one carrying a dish nobody asked for and all of them welcome.
The baby starts in one aunt's arms and does not return to the parents for most of the afternoon. Somebody holds the tongs the entire time and takes the job seriously. The turn comes around the point where a grandmother sits down in the shade with the baby asleep on her shoulder, and the whole yard quietly lowers its voice by half.

What to actually tell people
- One person on the tongs Pick who is working the smoker before guests arrive and let everyone else stay out of it. Brisket rests, gets sliced once, and goes out on a board rather than being picked at for an hour.
- A quiet room with a chair Set up one room indoors with a comfortable chair, a fan and the door closed. Feeding and naps will happen whether or not you planned for them, and nobody should have to ask where to go.
- Keep the baby upwind Put the bassinet or the shaded chair on the opposite side of the yard from the smoke. Leave soap and a towel by the kitchen door so hands get washed before the handoff.
- Sides finished the day before Slaw, beans and tea should be done and in the refrigerator so the afternoon only needs the meat. You cannot carry a platter and a newborn at the same time, and you will be asked to.
