Birthday invitation

Beau's Rodeo Round-Up

The best-dressed cowpoke is decided before cake, and the ruling is final.

Birthday invitation: Caramel saddle-leather card. BEAU'S RODEO ROUND-UP branded in slab capitals at top left, BEAU TURNS SIX pressed at right, and a brass-riveted dark strap with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation sets up a rodeo round-up at a ranch, where hay bales are the seating and the gravel road is longer than anyone expects. Kids arrive in boots, in fringe, in one belt buckle borrowed off a grandfather. There is a stick-horse barrel race marked out in traffic cones, a stopwatch nobody fully trusts, and a judging for best-dressed that is announced at a stated time and carried out in front of everyone.

Then the brisket comes off and the adults, who had planned to stand near the cooler, get entered into a heat. The six-year-old wins nothing and does not mind, because he is holding the stopwatch. Cake happens on a folding table under the only shade on the property, and three children fall asleep in the truck before the gate closes.

What to actually tell people

  • Buy more hay bales than you need Two per four guests, and expect them to shed on everything. Throw a flat sheet or an old quilt over each one and the parents will actually sit down.
  • Judge the best-dressed early Pick one adult who is not anyone's parent, line the kids up before the sugar lands, and give a real prize: a ribbon, a toy buckle, something they can wear out. Announce one winner and stop there.
  • Mark the barrel race properly Six traffic cones, a chalk start line and a stopwatch, with heats run by age so the four-year-olds are not racing the nine-year-olds. Keep a spare stick horse back for whichever one snaps.
  • Write the gate into the directions Ranch addresses drop pins in the wrong field and service goes out past the turn. Put the gate, the cattle guard and where to park in the text itself, and leave the gate propped open until the last car.
