A birthday invitation for a round-up, which in practice means a barn, a gravel turn-in and a crowd of four-year-olds in denim their parents already owned. The bales get dragged into a rough circle. The doors stay open at both ends so the air moves. Somebody's older cousin appoints himself in charge of the lemonade table and holds the post for ten minutes.

It runs across lunch, so there are sandwiches before cake and the cake is carried out while everyone is still chewing. The stick horses are left by the door, which lasts until one of them comes back inside under a jacket. The turn comes when the barn cat appears on a beam and every child goes silent at once. The cat leaves. The noise returns, slightly louder than before.

What to actually tell people

Feed them first Eleven to one is a lunch, whatever the cake says. Set out sandwiches and fruit on a folding table near the door and bring the cake out at the back end of it.
Cover the bales Hay goes through thin leggings in about four minutes. Throw old quilts or a canvas drop cloth over every bale you intend anyone to sit on.
Close the barn before anyone arrives Latch the feed room, the tack room and any gate you do not want tested. A four-year-old will find the one door you forgot.
Mark the parking A county road and a grass shoulder need two cones and one adult pointing. Text the turn-in landmark to the group the morning of, because the address alone will not be enough.
