Just because invitation

Butter Happens

Six butters come up to room temperature on the counter, and none of them are unsalted.

Just because invitation: Indigo denim card with a rhinestone border, a beaded butter stick in peeled foil, knife and toast patches, and puff-paint capitals reading BUTTER HAPPENS above the date and venue.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A just because invitation for a party where the butter is the point and everything else is a delivery system. Corn comes out of the pot in batches and gets rolled across a plate. Toast goes out in halves because the toaster only holds four. There is a crock of salted on the counter, a dish of honey butter beside it, and a stand mixer working a pint of cream into something nobody will shut up about.

The turn comes when the buttermilk gets poured off and someone asks for it in a glass. Guests stand around the counter with knives they did not bring, comparing a cultured one against the supermarket block, and losing. Radishes appear late and are gone first. The corn silk ends up everywhere, and the butter dish never goes back in the fridge.

What to actually tell people

  • Soften it hours ahead Cold butter tears toast and sits on corn in lumps. Put every block on a saucer well before guests arrive, somewhere out of the sun.
  • One knife per dish Shared knives move salted into the honey butter within minutes. Set a separate knife beside each crock and expect to wash them twice.
  • Churn a pint while people watch Heavy cream in a stand mixer takes about ten minutes to break, and the moment it does is the best thing that happens all afternoon. Pour the buttermilk into a jug rather than the sink.
  • Keep the corn moving Boil in small batches so nothing goes cold and tough waiting. A shallow plate of butter to roll each cob across works better than a brush and beats dipping.
