A just because invitation for an afternoon in the strawberry rows. Baskets go out at the gate, one per person, and the first ten minutes are quiet because everyone is working. Then the comparing starts. Someone picks only the enormous ones, someone picks for volume, and someone eats steadily and comes back with four inches in the bottom of a basket.

The turn happens at the table afterwards. Everything gets tipped out, hulled, and sorted into keep and eat-now, and the pile of green caps grows faster than anyone expected. Shortcake comes out, cream gets whipped too far, and three people stay on into the evening because a pot of jam has been started and jam cannot be left.

What to actually tell people

One basket per guest Shallow wicker, not deep, so the bottom layer survives the drive home. Line each one with a tea towel and nobody argues about whose is whose.
Set up the hulling station first Two bowls and a few paring knives on the table before anyone leaves for the rows. One bowl for green caps, one for berries, and the table wiped down while the work is still in progress.
Say what to wear Strawberry juice sets fast and comes out with cold water, never hot. Keep a bar of soap at the outdoor tap and nobody has to go inside with red hands.
Plan for the surplus Picked berries last about two days, so send guests home in pint containers and keep back the soft ones for jam or shortcake that evening. Cream whipped soft, not stiff.
