What the Final Touch is

A just because invitation for a coffee morning, where the guest list is mothers and the guests of honor cannot yet stand up. People arrive with car seats on one arm and a diaper bag on the other, the coffee table has already been pushed against the wall, and the floor is quilts and foam mats from the sofa to the bookshelf. The carafe is full. The pastries are cut in half so they can be eaten with one hand.

Conversation starts and restarts. Somebody gets three words into a story, retrieves a baby from under a chair, and picks the story up in the wrong place. Mugs go cold in rotation and get reheated without comment. Then, around the middle of the morning, two babies go down at the same time, and for about eleven minutes the room holds an actual uninterrupted sentence. Everyone notices. Nobody says so.

What to actually tell people

Clear the floor before anyone arrives Push the coffee table to the wall and put the mats down early, so nobody is rearranging furniture with a baby on her hip. Check the low corners and the cords behind the sofa while you are down there.
Brew into a carafe, not a cup at a time A single-cup machine turns you into a barista for two hours. Make a full pot, set out decaf alongside it, and leave the milk on the counter where people can reach it themselves.
Serve food that works with one hand Pastries cut in half, banana bread in slices, grapes in a bowl. Nothing that needs a knife, a fork, or two free hands and full attention.
Name an end time and hold to it Morning naps run the day, and everyone is quietly watching the clock. Putting a finish on the invitation lets people stay as long as they can without having to be the first to leave.
