A just because invitation for a loop around the neighborhood at nine in the morning, strollers out, coffee already in the cup holder. People arrive in the driveway a few minutes apart, adjust a sunshade, check a brake, and go. The route is flat and known. One front wheel squeaks for the entire first mile and nobody fixes it.

The first half is brisk. The second half is not. A toddler is unbuckled at the corner and walks the last block herself, which costs eleven minutes, and the group ends up sitting on the front steps with the mugs gone cold. The walk was the short part of the morning. Nobody treats that as a failure.

What to actually tell people

Walk the route first, alone Check it for curb cuts, shade and anything gravel. A loop that works on foot does not always work with four wheels and a sleeping passenger.
Give a leaving time, not a window Strollers roll at the stated hour. Anyone later than that catches up at the first corner, which is easier than it sounds on a straight road.
Coffee travels or it does not come Lids on, and nothing taller than the cup holder. Keep a thermos and a stack of cups on the porch rail for whoever arrives with empty hands.
Plan for the steps afterward Most of the talking happens once the walk is over. Set out water, a bench or two cushions, and somewhere shaded to feed a baby before anyone goes home.
