Wedding invitation

E & J

Guests arrive in black and white, and the room holds to it all evening.

Wedding invitation: Portrait card in deep matte black with a fine double silver rule framing the edge. Near the top, the initials E and J in large silver script separated by a small ampersand.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This wedding invitation belongs to an evening where the dress code is part of the plan. Guests come in black and white, the room is kept dark and lit low, and the couple's two initials in silver script turn up again on the escort cards, the napkins and the menu at each place. Nothing competes with it.

What happens is straightforward and paced. Drinks are passed on trays while people find their names on the seating chart. Dinner is served in courses, the toasts come between them, and the floor clears for the first dance before the band plays its first full set. Late in the night the lights drop further and the dancing goes on without anyone checking the time.

What to actually tell people

  • Say what black and white attire means Guests will ask whether it is black tie. Put one plain line on your website: tuxedos and dark suits, long or short dresses, black and white only. It saves a week of texts.
  • Carry the monogram through the room Two initials in silver script cost nothing to repeat. Use them on the escort cards, the cocktail napkins and the menu, and stop there so they still read as one idea.
  • Light the room before you decorate it A dark room lives or dies on candles, low lamps and a few uplights. Walk the space at the hour your reception starts and see what the tables actually look like.
  • Warn your photographer about the dark Black clothing, black linens and candlelight are demanding. Agree in advance on where the first dance happens and whether flash is used during dinner.
