Wedding invitation

L + T

The tablecloth comes out of the cedar chest and gets pressed the night before.

Wedding invitation: Warm white linen card with a scalloped lace border of small embroidered sprigs, a larger spray at the bottom right, and champagne stitched serif capitals reading L + T near the top.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This wedding invitation is for the kind of wedding built out of things a family already owns. A tablecloth that has been folded in tissue since someone else's wedding. A handkerchief tucked into a sleeve. Napkins with two initials stitched into the corner, set one to a place. The room is warm white and candlelit, and nothing on the table shouts.

The ceremony is close enough that people hear the vows without a microphone. Afterwards there is a long table, a cake set on bare linen, and someone pointing out which aunt stitched which corner. The first dance happens on a floor that was a dining room an hour earlier. Guests leave with the sense that they were in someone's house, even if they were not.

What to actually tell people

  • Ask for the heirloom pieces early The lace veil, the christening tablecloth and the handkerchief usually live in someone else's drawer. Ask three months out and give a date for posting, so nothing arrives the morning of.
  • Press everything the day before Linen that has been folded for years holds its creases. Iron it damp, hang it rather than refold it, and bring a travel steamer to the venue for the napkins.
  • Use the monogram once Two initials look right on the napkin corners or on the ribbon around the cake knife. Putting them on the signage, the favours and the dance floor as well undoes the quiet.
  • Hold the palette to three colours Warm white, oyster grey and champagne. Candles, ribbon, place cards and the flowers on the long table all sit inside it, which keeps a mixed set of borrowed linens looking like one table.
