Evelyn & Theo
A cathedral veil takes two people to lift it over the chapel steps.
The wedding invitation goes out for a late afternoon chapel ceremony where the veil is the thing people will talk about afterward. It is cathedral length, ivory tulle over a blush dress, held in place by a pearl and crystal comb that someone sets at the mirror an hour before anyone sits down. Two people carry the end of it up the steps. It settles once she is standing still at the front.
Then the doors open and the light changes. Guests move from the pews out to the champagne, the lace hem picks up dust from the stone, and the comb gets pushed back in twice during photographs. By the toast the veil is either lifted back or unpinned and laid somewhere safe, and the evening belongs to the flutes, the tables and the first dance.

What to actually tell people
- Practice the comb A pearl and crystal comb holds best in hair that has texture, not fresh conditioner. Set it once the day before with whoever is doing her hair, and keep a small tin of matching bobby pins with the bouquet.
- Measure the aisle before you choose the length A cathedral veil trails several feet behind the dress, so walk the chapel aisle and the steps in advance. Name two people whose job is to lift and lay it, and tell them where to stand during the vows.
- Decide when it comes off Most people want the veil for the ceremony and the first half hour of photographs, then want their arms back. Choose the moment, and give one person a padded hanger and a quiet room to hang it in.
- Set the toast an hour after the vows Pouring at six gives the room time to move from the pews to the glasses. Count flutes against your head count, tell the caterer the exact time, and ask the person speaking to go first so the champagne is still cold.
