Groovy One
Half the room is dressed for 1974 and the guest of honor is in corduroy overalls.
This birthday invitation is for a first birthday held in the living room on a weekend morning, with the furniture pushed back and a rug that was already brown. Guests arrive in bell-bottoms and wide collars pulled out of closets and parents' attics. The food is on the coffee table because that is the height everyone useful is at. Someone's mother brings a photograph of herself at the same age and it gets passed around twice.
The smash cake comes out in burnt orange buttercream and goes onto a tray on the floor. The one-year-old considers it for a long moment, puts one hand in, and then gets interested in the tray instead. Everybody takes the same photograph from four angles. By the time the frosting is off the fingers, the nap is due, and the party ends on schedule for once.

What to actually tell people
- Build the whole thing around the nap A late morning start gives you ninety good minutes before the one-year-old is done. Tell guests the end time on the invitation and mean it.
- Put the smash cake on something you can roll up Burnt orange frosting finds pale carpet immediately. A tray on a flat sheet, and a stack of warm washcloths within arm's reach of whoever is holding the camera.
- Dress the adults, not the baby Bell-bottoms and wide collars read in every photograph and come off the guests at the door. Keep the birthday outfit to corduroy or anything that survives a wash.
- Ask the grandparents for one photograph each Pictures of them at one year old, taped along the hallway at adult eye level. It gives the older guests something to stand in front of while the cake is being set up.
