One Lap Around the Sun
Cake is at noon because the nap is at one.
Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.
The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.
See the collectionThis birthday invitation is for a morning in the yard, the kind that starts at ten because that is the only hour a one-year-old is reliably agreeable. A quilt goes down in the shade. There is sunscreen on the hall table, a folding table with lemonade and a pitcher that sweats through its coaster, and a sunhat that stays on for about four minutes.
The guest of honor has now been around the sun once and has no opinion about it. Grandparents arrive early and stand close. Cake comes out at noon, frosting goes everywhere, and the whole thing is over by one, which was the plan from the beginning. Nobody stays to help carry the cooler in, and the host does it anyway, in good spirits.

Bring sunscreen. Cake at noon.

What to actually tell people
- Start at ten Morning is the one window a one-year-old can be counted on. Put the start time on the invitation and let the day end before the nap does.
- Sunscreen by the door A bottle on the hall table does more than a reminder in the group chat. Keep a spare sunhat next to it for whoever arrives without one.
- Shade before seating Set a quilt and two chairs where the shade will be at noon, not where it is at ten. The other parents will end up there with you.
- Say when the cake is Announce noon out loud when people arrive. Guests pace the morning around it, and the photos happen before the frosting reaches the elbows.
