Cherry on Top

The one-year-old eats the whipped cream and hands back the cherry.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation imagines a first birthday held outdoors in the afternoon, on a red gingham cloth with a bowl of cherries at the center of it. The grandparents arrive early. The two older cousins work through the cherries before anyone has sat down, and the stems collect in a saucer nobody put out on purpose.

Then the small cake comes out and goes onto the high chair tray. It is handled more than eaten. The red gets on the bib, the tray, the cloth and one grandfather's sleeve, and the photographs everyone keeps are from those four minutes. The guest of honor is asleep within the hour. Everyone else stays for coffee.

What to actually tell people

  • Pit the cherries before anyone arrives Whole cherries are not for guests under four, and the pits end up in the grass otherwise. Halve and pit a bowl for the small table, and leave the rest whole for the adults.
  • Set the cake at the start of the nap window A one-year-old has about ninety good minutes in them. Put the cake out early rather than saving it for late arrivals, and let the afternoon wind down after.
  • Plan for the red Red frosting travels. Keep the smash cake off the good cloth, have a stack of damp towels within reach of the high chair, and dress the birthday child in something you are willing to lose.
  • Give the grandparents chairs in the shade They will stay longest and they came for the photographs. Set two real chairs near the high chair tray rather than folding ones at the far end of the yard.
