A birthday invitation for a dog turning three brings a small group out to a park pavilion in the afternoon, leashes looped around chair legs, a water tub filling from a jug, and a tray of treats set out of reach until everyone has arrived. The guests who walk in on two legs bring bottles. The guest of honor wears a clean collar and greets each arrival at the edge of the grass, then loses interest entirely.

It turns when someone decides there should be a photograph. Four dogs are arranged on the low wall, three of them look at the lake, and the treat tray comes down off the table to buy their attention. The treat tray does not go back up. Everyone eventually sits down in the shade, the wine gets poured into cups, and the dogs sort out the afternoon among themselves.

What to actually tell people

  • Water before anything else Set a low tub out at the entrance and fill it from a jug before the first guest arrives. Afternoon sun on open grass empties it twice.
  • One treat, clearly labelled Pick a single biscuit recipe and leave the ingredients written on a card by the tray. Someone's dog is off chicken and their owner will be glad not to ask.
  • Keep the leashes on through arrivals A park pavilion has no fence and no gate. Clip everyone in until the headcount is settled, then let them off in one go rather than one at a time.
  • Take the portrait first The collar and the nameplate photograph best before the lake, the dirt and the treat tray. Do it in the first ten minutes while the dog still has patience for it.
