Birthday invitation

L

Every girl at the table orders a Shirley Temple and asks for it in a coupe.

Birthday invitation: Deep raspberry tufted velvet card with a diamond pleat grid, a rose-gold serif L at the top and a thin gold border. Script reads Layla's Sweet Sixteen, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This is a birthday invitation for sixteen people who intend to be treated like regulars. The back corner is held for the evening, the coats go on one rack by the door, and the banquette fills from the inside out because nobody wants the end seat. Heels come off under the table within the hour and nobody acknowledges it.

The menu gets read properly. Someone orders the shrimp cocktail on principle, someone else asks what the soup is and then orders the shrimp cocktail too. The turn comes when the room dims and the cake is carried out from the kitchen with the candles already going, and the girl in the middle of the velvet sits up straight and lets the whole room look. Part of the TinselLux collection: velvet, tufted into a diamond grid and pressed with a rose-gold foil rule, no glitter and no glow.

What to actually tell people

  • Hold the corner, not just the table Call the venue and ask specifically for the booth or the back banquette, then confirm it two days before. A long table in the middle of the floor is a different evening entirely.
  • Put the dress code on the invitation Say cocktail, and say it plainly, so nobody arrives in jeans and spends the night apologising for it. Tell people to bring flats in a bag for the walk back to the car.
  • Agree the drinks list in advance Ask the bar for Shirley Temples and sparkling cider in proper stemware, served on a tray. Sixteen separate orders at the table takes twenty minutes and kills the room.
  • Settle the cake with the kitchen Most places charge a plating fee for an outside cake and want it dropped off earlier in the day. Ask them to light it in the kitchen and carry it out after the mains are cleared.
