Birthday invitation

Sixteen, in Pearls

The heels come off under the table before dessert, and nobody mentions it.

Blush satin card with a double pearl border. Gold cursive reads Sixteen, in Pearls, then Lily's Birthday. An oval of pearls rings the date, with the venue below and Soft glam. Dinner at seven.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation imagines a sixteenth that runs like a dinner party: a reserved room, one long table, place cards in a hand that took two attempts. Guests arrive in blush and ivory, pearls borrowed from mothers and grandmothers, and stand for photographs in the doorway before anyone is allowed to sit. The courses come out in order. The water glasses get refilled by someone in a white shirt, which is, for most of the table, a first.

The turn happens somewhere around the main course, when the posture drops and the conversation stops being polite. Shoes come off. Someone tells the story everyone already knows and it is better the second time. Sparkling cider is poured into real glassware for a toast that the guest of honor pretends not to want. The pearls stay on all the way to the car.

What to actually tell people

  • Seat the table yourself Write place cards and set them before anyone walks in. A sixteenth with sixteen opinions does not seat itself, and the seating is the whole evening.
  • Have a jewelry station by the mirror Borrowed strands need a second pair of hands and a safety pin. Keep a small dish by the entry for anything that comes off during dinner, so it is not found under a chair.
  • Set the dress code in words they can act on Soft glam reads clearly to some guests and not at all to others. Name two colours and say whether jeans are out, and everyone arrives at the same level.
  • Hold the toast until the plates are cleared Pour the cider into stemmed glasses and say something short while the table is still seated. After dessert the room scatters and you will never get them all back.
