Birthday invitation

Lights Out Sleepover

Eight sleeping bags go down in the den, and by two there are two in the hallway.

Birthday invitation: Ivory satin card with a pink stitched striped border and a blush satin sleep mask with embroidered closed eyes at centre. Script 'Lights Out' above AVA'S 14TH SLEEPOVER, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation is for a fourteenth birthday that happens entirely indoors, on the floor. Guests arrive after dinner with a pillow under one arm and a duffel they will not fully unpack. Sleeping bags are laid out along one wall, then rearranged twice before anyone lies in one. Nail polish goes on a folded towel because the carpet is new. The basket sits by the stairs and takes the phones at nine, which is announced in advance and enforced without discussion.

The film gets forty minutes in before the talking takes over for good. Somewhere after midnight the group splits: three stay in the den, two move to the hallway where the light is still on, and one falls asleep sitting up and is left alone. Morning comes with pancakes, a count of who lost a sock, and a pickup window that drifts by an hour. The sleep mask is worn by exactly nobody and taken home by everyone.

What to actually tell people

  • Name the basket hour in the invitation Phones going in at nine lands better when it was written down a week earlier. Put the basket somewhere visible, like the bottom of the stairs, and put a power strip beside it.
  • Decide the floor plan before they arrive Eight sleeping bags in one room is a decision, not an accident. Clear one wall, move the coffee table out entirely, and keep the hallway light on so nobody navigates a dark staircase at three.
  • Plan for the midnight pickup One guest will be collected before morning, and her parent will text the host rather than her. Ask for pickup times on the RSVP so the front door is unlocked and the dog is shut away.
  • Count breakfast, not dinner They eat very little at eight in the evening and a great deal at nine in the morning. Buy for pancakes, fruit and orange juice, and set the table the night before so you are not doing it half asleep.
