This birthday invitation imagines a sweet sixteen run off two folding tables. One holds charms sorted into a bead tray: enamel hearts, cherries, a lipstick, a padlock, gold letters. The other holds denim jackets, a hot-fix rhinestone tool and three colours of puff paint, pink first among them. Guests claim charms in the first twenty minutes, and the initials go fastest.

By seven everything is setting. Wrists come out across the table to be compared, a sequin star gets pressed on slightly crooked and stays that way, and the cake arrives while the jackets lie flat drying. Nobody puts a coat on over wet paint. Everyone leaves in something they made that afternoon.

What to actually tell people

Sort the charms before the door opens A bead tray or a muffin tin, one compartment per charm type, with the jump rings in their own cup. Buy the gold initials in duplicate for the common letters, because two guests will want the same one.
Two pairs of pliers, minimum A jump ring opens properly with one pair holding and one pair twisting. With a single pair, guests bend the rings, give up, and pocket the charm to finish at home.
Clear a drying surface first Puff paint takes an hour, longer if it is laid on thick, and it will not survive being folded. Lay towels over the back of the sofa or a spare table and keep the sleeves flat and unstacked.
Keep the hot-fix tool off the cake table Rhinestone setters stay hot for a while after they are switched off, and they do not belong near plates. Finish the stones, move the tool to a tile or a cooling rack, then bring the cake out.
