One Ahoy
The smash cake is navy, and the romper does not survive it.
This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.
Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.
What the Final Touch isThe birthday invitation goes out for a one-year-old who will spend most of his own party on somebody's hip. Guests arrive in seersucker and boat shoes, which lasts about as long as the shade does. There is a tub of drinks on the porch, a platter of sandwiches cut into quarters, and one high chair positioned where every camera can reach it. The honoree is handed around in a navy romper with a brass anchor on the front, and he is pleasant about it for a surprisingly long stretch.
Then the cake arrives. It is small, it is navy, and it goes directly onto the tray, the chair, the floor and the romper in that order. Two grandmothers move in with napkins and are waved off by the photographer. Afterward there is a hose, a second outfit, and a long slow hour of adults finishing their lunch while the guest of honor falls asleep against somebody's shoulder.

What to actually tell people
- Put the cake before the nap A one-year-old has one good window and it is earlier than you think. Serve the adults their lunch first, then bring the cake out while he is still cheerful enough to be photographed with it.
- Plan for the navy frosting Dark blue icing stains skin, linen and grout. Lay a towel or a drop cloth under the high chair, keep a second romper on hand, and warn anyone wearing white seersucker to stand behind the chair rather than beside it.
- One high chair, twenty laps He will be passed around the whole party, so give the chair a fixed spot with light on it and clear space behind for photographs. Everything else can be folding chairs in the shade.
- Keep the drinks outside and cold A galvanized tub of ice by the porch steps saves twenty trips through a house with a baby asleep in it. Add lemonade in the same tub so the older cousins stop opening the refrigerator.
