Birthday invitation

Shark Bite

The foam fin gets strapped on at the ladder, and the deep end clears without a whistle.

Birthday invitation: Teal card with a raised shark fin at the top, a border of white rubber teeth, bubbles rising at right and bite dents lower right. Large white letters read SHARK BITE, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

The birthday invitation goes out for a swimming party run on one prop: a foam dorsal fin on an elastic strap, worn by one guest at a time. Everyone else holds the rope line, hangs off the steps, and watches the water. Dive rings go down two at a time and come up in fists. Goggles fog within four minutes and get rinsed in the shallow end by someone who learned the trick that morning.

Towels come off the fence around the halfway point, and the party moves to dry land for ten minutes. The cake comes out with a wedge already missing from one side, which is the point, and the candles are lit anyway. Nobody confesses. Then the fin goes to the next guest and the whole thing starts again until the last swimmer is asked twice to get out.

What to actually tell people

  • Put someone in the chair Rotate the post every twenty minutes so it stays a job rather than a favour.
  • One fin, on a timer A foam dorsal fin on an elastic strap works best when the turn is two minutes and the handover happens at the ladder. Announce the time, and the arguing stops before it starts.
  • Count the dive rings Weighted rings sink fast and read as nothing on a dark pool floor. Count them out of the bag at the start and back into it at the end, before anyone drains or covers anything.
  • Cake well back from the water Set the table far enough from the edge that wet hands have to dry on the way. Towels first, then cake, then back in: frosting and chlorine both travel.
