Birthday invitation

Truck Rally

The hazard tape goes up around the dirt pit, and it is the only rule anyone follows.

Birthday invitation: Charcoal diamond-plate card with yellow hazard-stripe border and corner rivets. Chrome capitals read TRUCK RALLY above an orange name, the date and venue below, and a muddy tire tread at the foot.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation is for a party that takes place on dirt. The pit gets watered down in the morning, hazard tape goes around it at waist height, and the trucks come out onto a folding table by the garage: oversized wheels, paint already chipped, two of them identical. Everyone arrives in clothes that have been cleared for ruin.

The runs start without an announcement and get formal within the hour. A plank on two cinder blocks becomes the ramp, a stack of empty cans becomes the thing to flatten, and the longest tire track left in the pit wins the round. Cake is cut on the back step, because nobody is going inside yet. The hose comes out last, and it is used on children.

What to actually tell people

  • Wet the pit the night before Dry dirt blows around and sticks to nothing. A bag of topsoil in a kiddie pool, soaked the evening before, holds a tread mark the next afternoon.
  • Tape a name inside every truck Four guests will bring the same truck in the same colour. A strip of masking tape on the underside settles it before anyone has to cry about it.
  • One bag of dry clothes per guest Ask for it on the invitation and label the bags at the gate. Put a folded tarp in each parent's trunk while you are at it.
  • Mark the spectator line Knobby wheels throw mud a surprising distance. Run the hazard tape a few feet back from the pit and put the folding chairs behind it, not beside it.
