Birthday invitation

Skate Park

The drop-in takes four attempts, and everyone on the coping counts them out loud.

Birthday invitation: Black skateboard deck underside with steel bolts at the corners and lime and orange chevrons down the right side. White stencil lettering reads SKATE PARK, with a lime name and the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A birthday invitation for the kind of party that starts at a fence gate rather than a front door. Guests arrive carrying their own decks, helmets go on before anything else, and the shallow end fills with people doing the same three tricks they already have. The older cousins claim the deep end. The smallest guest rides the flat bottom in a straight line, repeatedly, with total conviction.

Somewhere in the middle of the afternoon, somebody decides this is the day they drop in. The bowl clears without being asked. It takes a few goes, the coping gets waxed again, and the landing is met with boards slapping against concrete instead of applause. Cake happens afterward, on a folding table in the shade, with grip tape still on everyone's palms.

What to actually tell people

  • Bring spare helmets Half the guests will turn up without one, and the park will not lend you any. A crate of loaner helmets and wrist guards in two or three sizes solves the entire problem at the gate.
  • Pack a skate tool and wax Loose trucks and a dry coping end a party faster than anything else. One T-tool, a few spare bolts and a block of wax keeps every board in the bowl all afternoon.
  • Keep a scrape kit in the car Concrete takes skin. Bandages, wipes, and a bag of ice in a cooler cover almost everything, and the ice doubles for drinks.
  • Set the table out of the run lines A folding table at the top of the bowl gets hit by a runaway board eventually. Put the cake, the cooler and the gifts well back against the fence, in shade if the park has any.
