Birthday invitation

Touch Down

Orange slices come out at halftime, and the game stops for as long as they last.

Birthday invitation: Brown pebbled football leather card with a white chalk yard-line border and a laced seam down the right side. Large white stencil type reads TOUCH DOWN above a yellow name, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A birthday invitation for an afternoon that runs on a chalked lawn and a scoreboard nobody is keeping honestly. Lines go down before anyone arrives, two cones stand in for an end zone, and teams are picked by who can throw. The ball has real laces, which matters to exactly one guest, loudly.

Quarters are short. The first is cautious, the second is not, and by the third someone has gone down on grass that was never that soft to begin with. Halftime is orange slices on a tray and a headcount. Then the fourth quarter, which is cake, served at the sideline while the cleats are still on.

What to actually tell people

  • Chalk the lines the morning of Field marking chalk or plain flour, pulled along a string, gives you yard lines that survive an afternoon of running. The lines do more work than the end zone does: they tell small guests where to stop.
  • Set the rules before the first snap Two-hand touch, a five count before anyone rushes, and one adult who calls everything. Say it once to the whole group, not team by team, so there is no debate later about what was agreed.
  • Keep the quarters short Ten minutes a quarter is plenty for anyone under ten, with a real halftime in the middle for orange slices and water. Announce that the fourth quarter is cake and the clock stops running itself.
  • Build a sideline Folding chairs along one side, a cooler, ice packs and a bag of spare socks. Put a mat and a shoe row at the back door, because the cleats will otherwise come inside with half the field attached.
