Wedding invitation

Sophie & Lucas

The ceremony is in the garden, and the lace on the dress belonged to someone else first.

Wedding invitation: Ivory linen card with a band of floral Chantilly lace and a champagne satin ribbon across the top. Below, Sophie & Lucas in embroidered script, with the date and venue beneath.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This wedding invitation is for a garden wedding that starts in the late afternoon, when the light has gone warm and the grass is still dry. Chairs are set out in rows on the lawn. The lace is the thread running through everything: a piece cut from a grandmother's dress and sewn inside the hem, a length tied around the bouquet stems, ivory runners down the length of the tables.

After the ceremony the chairs get moved, the linen comes out, and dinner is served while it is still light. Guests wear soft colors and flat or block heels because of the ground. There are hand-written place cards, a cake on a side table, and a first dance on a floor laid over the grass once the plates are cleared.

What to actually tell people

  • Spell out garden party attire Tell guests the ceremony is on grass so they choose block heels or flats, and say whether the evening cools off enough for a jacket. One extra line on the invitation saves a dozen questions.
  • Take the old lace to a seamstress early Heirloom lace is fragile and often needs washing, backing or re-edging before it can be sewn into a hem, a sleeve or a ring pillow. Hand it over six weeks ahead, not the week of.
  • Work backward from the light A half-past-five ceremony means portraits land in the best hour and the light drops fast after dinner. Have lanterns or string lights ready to go on over the tables before anyone notices it is dark.
  • Weight the linen Evening air moves across an open lawn and lifts runners, menus and place cards. Small smooth stones, pinned corners or a napkin laid over each card will hold the table together.
