Birthday invitation

Square One

The cake lands at three, and the crocheted blanket is in the wash by four.

Cream crocheted blanket card bordered by mustard and red granny squares, with SQUARE ONE and MAYA'S FIRST BIRTHDAY stitched in red yarn, a wooden stacking ring toy at right, date and venue below.

This birthday invitation is for a first birthday that happens entirely at floor level. The crocheted blanket goes down in the living room, the coffee table goes out to the hall, and everyone sits in a loose ring around a baby who is mainly interested in the stack of wooden rings. Grandparents arrive early. An aunt starts washing things that are already clean.

Cake comes out at three. There is a small plain one for the guest of honor and a larger one for the adults, who came for cake. The smash lasts about ninety seconds and produces forty photographs, three of which are usable. By four the blanket is folded, the baby is in the bath, and the rings are back on the dowel in the wrong order.

What to actually tell people

  • Lay the blanket first Move the coffee table out and put the blanket down before anyone arrives. It decides where people sit, and it keeps the whole afternoon at one height.
  • Build the two hours around the nap Start after she wakes, not before. A first birthday that runs past the second nap is a first birthday nobody remembers fondly.
  • Two cakes, one towel A small unfrosted one for the high chair and a proper one for the adults. Keep a towel, a packet of wipes and a change of clothes within arm's reach of the chair.
  • Give the camera to one person Pick somebody who is not a parent and ask them to hold the phone from the first bite to the last. The parents should be in the photographs, not behind them.
