Birthday invitation

Slam Dunk

Every guest gets three tries at the free-throw line before the cake is cut.

Birthday invitation: Honey maple basketball court floor with navy and red painted lane markings at left and black sneaker scuffs at right. Navy varsity capitals read SLAM DUNK; script below reads Nothing but cake, with the date and venue between.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation is for a party that happens on a booked court: two hours of gym time, a ball cart wheeled out of the storage closet, and the rim cranked down to eight feet. Guests sort into pinnies at the baseline. There is a warm-up, a scrimmage with the clock running, and a half-court shot contest that nobody wins and everybody enters. The scoreboard is operated by whichever adult volunteered first and is not to be trusted.

When the buzzer goes, the folding table comes out by the bleachers and the cake is cut at center court. Shoes squeak the whole time. Phones come out for the dunk line, where each guest takes a run at the low rim and lands flat-footed to applause. The floor gets swept and the scoreboard gets reset to zero before anyone leaves. The scuff marks stay.

Every line of the wording is an example, and yours to replace. The title is painted into the artwork. Type your own and it is drawn again with your words.

What to actually tell people

  • Book the gym, not the room Rec centers rent the court in blocks, usually by the hour, and the block after yours belongs to someone else. Ask what time the lights go off and whether the hoop can be lowered.
  • Ask about the shoe rule Most hardwood floors are closed to black-soled shoes and all street boots. Put the rule in the invitation so eleven kids are not standing in socks at the baseline.
  • Pinnies decide the teams Bring two sets in different colors and hand them out at the door rather than picking sides. It takes ninety seconds and prevents the only argument that actually ruins a game.
  • Cake lives off the court No food on the varnish. Set a folding table on the rubber by the bleachers, keep drinks in a cooler on the floor, and cut everything before it comes near the planks.
