Birthday invitation

Home Run

Scorekeeping is abandoned in the third, and the hot dogs go on the grill at eleven.

Birthday invitation: Navy pinstriped flannel card, white varsity lettering reading HOME RUN, a cream leather strip of red seams down the right edge, cleat prints in dirt at lower left, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This birthday invitation belongs to a morning at a rented diamond. The field is yours for two hours, the bases go down before anyone arrives, and the batting order is written on a paper plate taped to the chain-link. Kids turn up in mismatched caps and whatever shoes they own. Every batter is pitched to until they connect, and the right fielder has been told what to do about it.

By the third inning the score is a matter of opinion. The grill goes on behind the backstop, hot dogs come out in foil, and the game pauses for as long as the food lasts. Cake is cut on the bleachers, gifts ride in a wagon, and one guest slides into second with no runner behind him and no reason at all. The dirt leaves with everybody.

What to actually tell people

  • Book the field, not the park Call the parks department or the local league and reserve the diamond by name, with a start and end time. Ask two things while you have them: whether the infield gets dragged that morning, and whether a grill is allowed on site.
  • Bring more bats than you think Two lighter bats and a batting tee keep the line moving when a six-year-old needs eleven pitches. A bucket of a dozen balls saves somebody jogging to the fence between every hitter.
  • Feed them before the last inning Set the hot dogs for the middle of the party, not the end, and run the folding table behind the backstop where it is out of the throwing lanes. Buns, foil and a bag of ice go in the car first.
  • The dugout is the only shade A diamond at eleven in the morning has no cover anywhere else, so put the water cooler on the bench and sunscreen by the gate. Pack a towel per kid for the ride home, because the infield dirt is coming with you.
