A Little Gentleman
A wooden rocking horse waits by the gift table for a boy who cannot sit up yet.
Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.
The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.
See the collectionThis baby shower invitation imagines an afternoon tea at the house, in the front room with the lamps on and the good cups down off the top shelf. Sandwiches are cut into triangles and set on a tiered stand. There is a pot of black tea and a second pot for anyone who cannot have caffeine past two. The tablecloth has been pressed, and someone has put the tartan throw over the arm of the sofa.
The mother-to-be sits in the chair with the best light. Gifts come wrapped in brown paper and ribbon: knitted blankets, a silver cup, small cotton clothes that get held up and passed along the row. A beech rocking horse stands by the gift table, too big to wrap, waiting for a boy who will not use it for a year. People stay about two hours, and the grandmothers stay longer.

What to actually tell people
- Warm the pot before the first guests arrive Make one pot of strong black tea and one of decaf or herbal, and keep both going. Put milk in a small jug, sugar cubes in a bowl, and lemon slices on a saucer so nobody has to ask.
- Cut the sandwiches small and count them out Egg salad, cucumber and butter, chicken salad: crusts off, cut into triangles or fingers. Plan on three or four per guest, and keep them under a damp tea towel until the tray goes out.
- Give every guest a chair and somewhere to set a cup Tea does not work standing up. Bring in the dining chairs, pull side tables next to the sofa, and save the two best seats for the mother-to-be and whichever grandmother travelled furthest.
- Treat the rocking horse as the keepsake it is Set it where it can be seen rather than in a corner, and let the gift table build up around it. A small brass plate with the baby's name and birth date can be added to the base later.
